The Unit for Epidemiological Nutrition Research (EEK)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Unit for Epidemiological Nutrition Research (EEK) was established in 1998 with a 5-year grant of 5 million DKK from the FREJA program (Female Researchers in Joint Action) under the Danish Health Science Independent Research Council. The grant was awarded to Professor Berit L. Heitmann.<\/p>\n

Purpose of EEK<\/strong><\/p>\n

The purpose of EEK was to collect, validate, harmonize, and make available data from population studies that included health information as well as data on individuals’ intake of energy and nutrients from food. At that time, several cohorts, including data from the Glostrup population studies, had already collected dietary information from smaller population samples. However, the datasets were small, participants\u2019 age and gender varied, and the methods of collecting dietary data differed. There was thus a need to ensure that the data was valid, harmonize it, and subsequently combine it, allowing for research into the impact of diet on the development of lifestyle diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, and early death. At the time, there were no standalone studies that could support research on the impact of diet on disease development, and the data from EEK were the first to examine how the dietary habits of Danes influenced their health.<\/p>\n

The application for the FREJA grant was written in collaboration between Berit Heitmann, Marianne Schroll, Agnes Petersen, and Merete Osler, who formed a joint steering group during the grant period. After the funding period ended, Berit Heitmann secured additional funds for the Unit, which grew from 3 employees in 1998\/99 to employing between 12 and 16 full-time staff members since 2008, all funded by external grant money. The Unit has attracted more than 200 million DKK since 1998, and in this period, it has trained over 42 PhD students to thesis defense, approximately 90 bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s theses, and published more than 400 scientific articles.<\/p>\n

Current Research and Databases<\/strong><\/p>\n

Today, EEK houses not only the harmonized and validated longitudinal dietary database from the Glostrup population studies but also data on diet and health from several large prospective childhood studies, including SundStart (http:\/\/www.sundstart.nu<\/a>), EYHS, the Ballerup Study, and YSS. Additionally, EEK holds data on the link between perinatal vitamin D levels and later disease development (D-tect, http:\/\/www.d-tectingdisease.dk<\/a>), as well as data on the development of dietary intake and health in older adults (SENECA, Tandkost). More recently, data from the Horizon 2020 project NohoW (http:\/\/www.nohow.eu<\/a>) is also housed at EEK. This project investigates new IT-based methods to help individuals maintain long-term weight loss. EEK is also involved in the EnTrance project, which examines the role of dietary fatty acid composition in the risk of developing childhood cancer and other early life diseases.<\/p>\n
